Abstract

Research Purpose
This study aims to explore the multidimensional interactive construction model of national self-perception and external communication in the digital era. It proposes a "multidimensional interactive model of digitalized national self" to reveal the dynamic mechanisms of national identity construction in the digital environment and expand the research perspective of international communication.
Research Background
The development of digital communication technologies has led to multidimensional interactive characteristics in national external communication. Countries dynamically shape their external image through self-presentation and interactive construction across multiple dimensions. Taking China's "Belt and Road" initiative communication in Southeast Asia as an example, this study analyzes the interactive process of digitalized national self-construction.
Theoretical Model
The "multidimensional interactive model of digitalized national self" includes four dimensions of interactive construction: (1) Individual self: national identity formed based on historical and cultural traditions, a relatively stable inward-oriented identity; (2) Social self: self-positioning formed through international relations interactions, reflecting external role perception and adaptation; (3) Other self: identity impressions projected by the international community, reflecting external evaluations and perceptions; (4) Digital self: strategically shaped external image on digital platforms, showcasing digitalized identity communication.
Research Methods and Data
This study employs mixed research methods and communication data from 2014-2023 across four dimensions: (1) Individual self: "Belt and Road" reports from People's Daily and CGTN, reflecting national subject expression; (2) Social self: China-Southeast Asia "Belt and Road" cooperation and exchanges, reflecting bilateral interactions; (3) Other self: Southeast Asian media reports and Google search data, showing international attention and evaluations; (4) Digital self: "Belt and Road" online initiative interpretations, reflecting strategic communication on digital platforms.
Data Analysis
Content analysis examines the communication theme frameworks of individual and digital selves; descriptive statistics analyze the reporting quantity and emotional tendencies of the other self; cointegration analysis tests the interactive relationships and communication effects among the four dimensions.
Research Findings
(1) The four dimensions exhibit differences: individual self is policy-oriented, social self involves interactive construction, other self provides independent evaluations, and digital self engages in strategic communication; (2) The four dimensions closely interact: individual self guides social interactions, social self influences other's evaluations, other self promotes digital self-adjustment; (3) Digital communication enhances the immediacy and complexity of interactions across all dimensions.
Research Significance This study theoretically innovates by constructing a digitalized national self-communication model, deepening research on the dynamic construction of national identity; practically, it provides new ideas for evaluating national image communication effects and optimizing strategies.
