Abstract

The International Social Survey Program (ISSP) was established in 1984 to collect high-quality survey research data cross-nationally. To do so it had to adopt methodological practices that would generate scientifically valid and reliable data across countries. This paper examines ISSP efforts and how they were adapted and extended over time. It covers the following areas: 1) sample design, 2) target populations, 3) weighting, 4) validation interviews and interviewing, 5) mode, 6) nonresponse, and 7) translation.
