Abstract

Global Voting Trends: Analysis of Parliamentary Elections

In the framework of the “Global Voting Trends” Panel, this article focuses on the parliamentary elections held in the last five years, worldwide. Beyond the electoral results of each country and the role of polls, the aggregate analysis of these electoral processes allows outlining global trends that surpass national boundaries.

Within globalization, where territories are more connected and culture is becoming more and more homogeneous, it is necessary to determine if this convergence also occurs with voting and if we can delimit transnational tendencies. In this way, a country's electoral results and its social trends can be used to predict the outcome of future elections in other countries, posing new challenges to the polling industry, which will also have to expand its approach.

The specific features of parliamentary systems require a separate section within this panel. For this reason, this article will focus on them. In addition to analyzing common trends with presidential systems, it will also perform a comparative analysis among the particularities of each parliamentary electoral system and the role played by polls in the electoral process, focusing on the main differences by country.
