How the use of the social media can increase the political participation of young people in Morocco?

Abstract


Citizenship is achieved through access to the fundamental political and social rights and is reinforced by the participation in social life. Although Morocco is characterized by strong movements of the young population as the rate of the population aged between 15 and 25 constitutes 20%, many studies have stressed on the weak interest of the young in active political participation. Many past studies and researchs stress that there is a certain dissection of young from political participation. The new social and political changes that Morocco witnessed have a positive impact on youth political participation. The emergence of the Arab Spring and the 20th February movement have led to the fall of many political regimes in the Arab world in 2011, which have paved the way to the adoption of a new strategy that promotes youth participation in political and social affairs. In his famous speech of March 9th 2001, King Mohamed 6th laid out the guidelines for the new constitution and announced the creation of the youth advisory board that boosts for a large participation of the youth since they are the cornerstones of any economic, social and intellectual development.
The objective of this contribution is to describe the young Moroccan’s participation, notably, in the political life; with special emphasis on their attitudes towards participation in social change, their opinions on the social movement as well as their use of the social media tools. The contribution will unearth the specificities of young people in Morocco and how the use of the social media can increase the participation of youth in the political life. The paper will trace a state of the settings and responses to the questions linked to the youth political participation through national surveys realized in Morocco between 2014 and 2016 within the framework of the Arab barometer and the Arab Trans project “Political and Social Transformations in the Arab World. European Commission - FP 7 ».
